What is the Berlin Wall?

The Berlin Wall (Berliner Mauer) was a fortified barrier that divided West Berlin from East Berlin and surrounding East Germany from 13 August 1961 to 9 November 1989. Built by the Communist government of the German Democratic Republic (GDR/East Germany), the Wall became the most potent symbol of the Cold War division between the Western and Soviet blocs.

Between 1949 and 1961, approximately 2.5 million East Germans had fled to West Germany, draining the GDR of its workforce. On 13 August 1961, East German authorities began erecting a barbed wire and concrete barrier to halt this exodus. By the 1980s, the Wall had evolved into a sophisticated system of reinforced concrete slabs over 3 metres high, with a "death strip" between two parallel walls containing watchtowers, alarmed fencing, anti-vehicle obstacles, and armed patrols. The total length was over 155 km.

The Wall fell on 9 November 1989 when East German official Gunter Schabowski mistakenly announced that borders were open immediately. Thousands of East Berliners surged to the crossings, and overwhelmed guards opened the gates. German reunification followed on 3 October 1990. Over 100 people died attempting to cross the Wall during its 28-year existence.
