Prelims — Subject-wise Question Count (2019-2024)

Science & Technology910121412911.2
Sources: SuperKalam PYQ analysis (2019-2023), PW OnlyIAS (2024). Highlighted = highest for that year.
Key insight: No single subject dominates every year. Environment spiked to 27 in 2022, Geography surged to 19 in 2024, History hit 20 in 2021. UPSC deliberately rotates emphasis — you cannot afford to skip any subject.
Current Affairs: Averaged ~16.5 standalone, but true exposure is 30-40% when CA-linked questions in every subject are counted.

Source: UPSC official cutoff notifications. 2023 dipped sharply — attributed to harder paper.
What this means: You need ~90-100 marks (45-50%) in a normal year. With -0.66 marking, answering 75 correctly out of 85 attempted is safe. The 2023 dip shows cutoff adjusts for difficulty — don't panic on a hard paper.

How to Use PYQs Effectively

1️⃣

Topic-wise, not year-wise

Group by topic (all Polity PYQs together). Reveals which sub-topics UPSC returns to.

2️⃣

Attempt before reading notes

Can't answer? Now you know what to focus on. Can? Move faster through that topic.

3️⃣

Analyse wrong answers

Prelims: why was each option wrong? Mains: what dimensions did you miss?

4️⃣

Track frequency

5+ times in 10 years = UPSC favourite. Invest disproportionate time there.

5️⃣

Simulate exam conditions

100 Qs, 2 hours, no notes. Builds exam temperament — the #1 D-day factor.

6️⃣

Revise with PYQs as flashcards

Can you answer each confidently? If not, revisit. PYQs = ultimate revision checklist.
