What is the Chola Navy?

The Chola Navy was the maritime military force of the Chola dynasty of South India, considered one of the most powerful navies of the medieval world. Under Rajendra Chola I (r. 1014–1044 CE), the Chola Navy undertook a historic naval expedition against the Srivijaya Empire in Southeast Asia in 1025 CE, projecting Indian military power across the Indian Ocean and establishing Chola dominance over critical maritime trade routes.

The Chola Navy enabled the dynasty to control the Bay of Bengal, the Strait of Malacca, and trade routes linking India with China, Southeast Asia, and the Arab world — making the Cholas the first Indian power to project significant naval force overseas.
