What is PM Gati Shakti?

PM Gati Shakti -- National Master Plan (NMP) for Multi-Modal Connectivity is a digital platform and planning framework launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 13 October 2021. It is a GIS-based (Geographic Information System) platform that integrates the infrastructure plans of 16 key Central Ministries (including Railways, Roads, Shipping, Aviation, Telecom, and Power) to enable coordinated, integrated, and holistic planning of infrastructure projects across the country.

The core objective is to break departmental silos, eliminate duplication of efforts, reduce logistics costs, and ensure last-mile connectivity. Before Gati Shakti, different ministries planned infrastructure independently, leading to situations where a newly laid road would be dug up for laying cables or pipelines. The platform brings all infrastructure databases onto a single digital map with over 1,600 data layers, enabling planners to visualise existing and planned infrastructure together.

The initiative is anchored in the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry. Every new infrastructure project above a certain threshold must be evaluated through the Network Planning Group (NPG) mechanism to ensure alignment with the national master plan. The platform also integrates with the National Infrastructure Pipeline (NIP) and National Logistics Policy (2022).
