Overview
Indian Knowledge Systems (IKS) encompass the vast body of intellectual, scientific, technological, and philosophical knowledge developed on the Indian subcontinent over more than four millennia. Distinct from the philosophical schools covered under the six Darshanas, IKS focuses on India's applied and empirical traditions: the decimal place-value system and zero that transformed world mathematics; astronomical observatories from Vedanga Jyotisha to Jantar Mantar; Ayurveda's codified medical science; metallurgical feats like the rust-resistant Iron Pillar and high-carbon Wootz steel; Panini's generative grammar of Sanskrit; Kautilya's science of statecraft in the Arthashastra; Patanjali's systematic Yoga; traditional ecological knowledge embedded in centuries of land-use practice; and the architectural science of Vastu Shastra and Harappan town planning. Recognised prominently in NEP 2020, IKS is increasingly relevant for UPSC GS-1 (Indian heritage and culture) and GS-3 (science and technology). Questions in this area test specific scholars, their works, and the global impact of India's intellectual heritage.
