Census 2027 Phase-I begins 1 April 2026
India's 16th Census — and its first fully digital one — commenced its Houselisting and Housing Census phase on 1 April 2026. Enumeration uses a 33-question schedule in 16 languages via a mobile app; citizens can also self-enumerate online. Caste data will be captured separately in Phase-II (Population Enumeration, February 2027).

Jyotirao Phule Bicentenary observed (11 April 2026)
The nation marked the 200th birth anniversary of social reformer Mahatma Jyotirao Phule. Phule (1827-1890) founded the Satyashodhak Samaj (1873), pioneered girls' education and led a frontal challenge to caste-based discrimination in 19th-century Maharashtra.

Viksit Bharat Shiksha Adhishthan (VBSA) Bill introduced
The VBSA Bill proposes a single Commission — the Viksit Bharat Shiksha Adhishthan — as the supreme regulator for higher education, replacing the UGC, AICTE and NCTE. It operationalises the National Education Policy, 2020 recommendation of a Higher Education Commission of India (HECI) with four verticals (regulation, accreditation, funding, academic standards).

CYCLONE-IV: India–Egypt joint special-forces exercise
An Indian Army contingent departed in April 2026 for the fourth edition of Joint Special Forces Exercise CYCLONE-IV in Egypt. The exercise focuses on counter-terrorism, desert warfare and interoperability between Indian and Egyptian special forces.

Womaniya on GeM: ₹28,000 crore of orders for 2.1 lakh women entrepreneurs
PIB data released in April 2026 showed the Womaniya initiative on the Government e-Marketplace (GeM) has enabled over 2.1 lakh women entrepreneurs to secure procurement orders worth ₹28,000 crore since its 2019 launch.

RBI holds repo rate at 5.25%; FY27 GDP projected at 6.9%
The MPC, in its 6-8 April 2026 meeting under Governor Sanjay Malhotra, unanimously held the policy repo rate at 5.25% and retained the "neutral" stance. SDF at 5.00%, MSF/Bank Rate at 5.50%. FY27 GDP projected at ~6.9%; CPI inflation at 4.6%. The MPC flagged West-Asia supply-chain risk.

Prototype Fast Breeder Reactor (PFBR) achieves criticality at Kalpakkam
India's 500-MWe PFBR at Kalpakkam, Tamil Nadu, attained first criticality — a decisive step into Stage II of India's three-stage nuclear programme. A fast-breeder uses fast neutrons (no moderator) and a U-238/Pu-239 fuel blanket to generate more fissile material than it consumes.

CPI inflation rises to 3.40% in March 2026
Retail inflation on the revised base (2024=100) rose to 3.40% (provisional) in March 2026 from 3.21% in February — the highest in over a year. Rural inflation: 3.63%; urban: 3.11%. Food inflation climbed to 3.87%; fuel/electricity inflation jumped to 1.65% on LPG price revision.
Why it matters: GS3 Economy — justifies the RBI's decision to pause.

INS Taragiri commissioned into the Indian Navy
The stealth frigate INS Taragiri, a Project-17A class ship, was commissioned on 3 April 2026. With >75% indigenous content and BrahMos/MRSAM weapon fits, Taragiri is the third P-17A frigate delivered and strengthens blue-water capability.

Indian Railways FY26: record locomotive output, 1,670 MT loading
Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw released FY 2025-26 performance data showing a record 1,674 locomotives manufactured indigenously and an all-time-high freight loading of 1,670 million tonnes, led by coal, cement and foodgrains.

World Bank: India FY27 growth cut to 6.6%
The World Bank in April 2026 revised India's FY27 GDP growth projection downward to 6.6% from 7.2% earlier, citing global trade uncertainty. South Asia growth is pegged at 6.3% (2026), down from 7.0% (2025).
