Study Time Best Practices
From toppers and productivity research — apply what works for you.
⏰ How Many Hours?
- Full-time aspirant: 8–10 hours/day of FOCUSED study (not 14 hours of distracted study).
- Working professional: 4–5 hours weekdays + 8–10 hours weekends = ~40 hrs/week.
- College student: 3–4 hours weekdays + 6–8 hours weekends.
- Quality > quantity: Most toppers cite 6–8 hours of deep work, not 12 hours of half-attention.
📚 Subject Balance
- Aim for 2–3 subjects per day — switching helps retention.
- Weekly target: ~7 hrs per major GS subject + 8 hrs optional + 4 hrs current affairs + 3 hrs answer writing.
- Don't neglect Ethics (GS-IV) and Essay — both are scoring with consistent practice.
- Friday/Sunday revision: Reserve 1 day a week for revising the entire week's content.
🔥 Building a Streak
- Log every day, even rest days — 0 hours is a valid entry. Honest tracking matters.
- 1 day off per week is healthy — burnout kills more attempts than under-preparation.
- 21 days = habit: If you can sustain logging for 21 consecutive days, it becomes automatic.
- Don't game the metric: Track real focused hours, not chair time.
⚠️ Warning Signs
- Logging same subject 5+ days: You're avoiding others. Rotate.
- Total <3 hrs for 3+ days: Burnout incoming. Take a real break, then reset.
- Total >12 hrs for 7+ days: Diminishing returns + sleep debt. Sustainable > heroic.
- No current affairs for 7+ days: You're falling behind on Prelims-essential content.
Frequently Asked Questions
Where is my data stored?
All your study log data is stored in your browser's localStorage. It never leaves your device — no server, no account, no tracking. If you clear browser data or use a different device, you'll lose your history. Use the Export JSON button to back up periodically.
Can I use this on my phone?
Yes — the tracker is fully responsive. However, mobile and desktop have separate localStorage. Log from one device consistently, or export/import the JSON to sync.
How accurate should my logging be?
Aim for focused hours, not chair hours. If you sat with a book for 4 hours but were distracted half the time, log 2 hours. Honest tracking is the only way this tool helps. Round to nearest 15 minutes.
Can I add custom subjects?
Yes — click "+ Add custom subject" to add anything beyond the standard list. Useful for optional subjects, language papers, or specific topics like "Ethics case studies" or "Essay practice".
