What is the Battle of Talikota?

The Battle of Talikota (also known as the Battle of Raksasa-Tangadi), fought on 23 January 1565, was a watershed conflict between the Vijayanagara Empire (under regent Aliya Rama Raya) and a combined alliance of the Deccan Sultanates — Ahmadnagar, Bijapur, Golconda, and Bidar. The battle resulted in a decisive defeat for Vijayanagara, leading to the capture and execution of Rama Raya on the battlefield and the subsequent destruction and abandonment of the capital city of Vijayanagara (Hampi).

The battle permanently reconfigured Deccan politics, ending Vijayanagara's dominance and allowing the Deccan Sultanates to assert control over the region.
