Who was Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel?

Sardar Vallabhbhai Jhaverbhai Patel (31 October 1875 -- 15 December 1950) was India's first Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister (1947-1950), universally known as the "Iron Man of India" for his resolute leadership in unifying the nation. A barrister by profession who studied law in England, Patel became a leading figure in the Indian independence movement under Mahatma Gandhi.

His most towering achievement was the integration of 562 princely states into the Indian Union within just two years of independence. Working with V.P. Menon, Patel used a combination of persuasion, diplomacy, and when necessary, firm action (as in Operation Polo against Hyderabad) to forge a united India. Through this integration, India acquired an additional 5 lakh square miles of territory with a population of 86.5 million.

Patel is also remembered as the "patron saint of India's civil servants" for establishing the modern All India Services system (IAS, IPS), which he called the "steel frame" of the country. The Statue of Unity, the world's tallest statue at approximately 182 metres (597 ft), was dedicated to him on 31 October 2018 near the Sardar Sarovar Dam in Gujarat.
