Sangam

noun (countable)
/ˈsʌŋɡəm/
Sangam (literally 'confluence') refers to the three legendary literary academies (Tamil: cankam) said to have convened in Madurai under Pandya royal patronage, producing the corpus of classical Tamil Sangam literature (c. 300 BCE–300 CE). Comprising approximately 2,381 poems by 473 named poets in collections such as Purananuru, Akananuru, and Tolkappiyam (the earliest Tamil grammar), this literature is the primary source for the history, society, and trade of early South India. Geographically, 'sangam' also denotes a river confluence, as at Allahabad (Prayagraj), where the Ganga, Yamuna, and mythical Saraswati meet.

✍️ Usage in a UPSC answer

The Sangam corpus, particularly the Purananuru's heroic poems and the Akananuru's love poetry, provides unmediated evidence of chieftaincy, long-distance trade with Rome, and caste fluidity in early Tamil society — data unavailable from any other source for this period.

🔡 Root

Sanskrit/Tamil saṃgama = coming together; Sanskrit sam- (together) + gam- (to go) → 'a going-together'

📜 Etymology

From Sanskrit saṃgama (confluence, meeting, assembly), from sam- (together, completely) and gam (to go). The Tamil caṅkam is a phonological adaptation of this Sanskrit term. The tradition of three successive academies (First, Second, and Third Sangam) is largely legendary, but the textual corpus datable to c. 300 BCE–300 CE constitutes the oldest secular literature in any Dravidian language.

🧠 Memory Hook

SANGAM = SANGs met TOGETHER: ancient Tamil poets SANGamed (gathered) to SANG (sing/recite) their poems. The confluence of great minds — just like the confluence of rivers.
