Wildlife Sanctuaries (WLS) are a Protected Area category under the Wild Life (Protection) Act, 1972. India has 573 wildlife sanctuaries covering 1,23,762.56 sq km — about 3.76% of India's geographical area (as of March 2025, per the Wildlife Institute of India / National Wildlife Database). The largest is Kutch Desert Wildlife Sanctuary (Gujarat, ~7,506 sq km) and the smallest is Kutch Bustard Sanctuary (Gujarat, ~2 sq km). Andaman & Nicobar Islands has the most wildlife sanctuaries (97). UPSC tests sanctuary–species matching, sanctuary–state location, and the NP-vs-WLS legal distinction.

Don't confuse National Park vs Wildlife Sanctuary: A National Park has stricter protection — no human activity/grazing is allowed and boundaries are fixed by law; a Sanctuary permits certain regulated activities (grazing, collection) at the Chief Wildlife Warden's discretion and can be up/down-graded. Several famous "sanctuaries" people name are actually National Parks (e.g. Dachigam for the hangul is a National Park).
