Wildlife Sanctuaries (WLS) are a Protected Area category under the Wild Life (Protection) Act, 1972. India has 573 wildlife sanctuaries covering 1,23,762.56 sq km — about 3.76% of India's geographical area (as of March 2025, per the Wildlife Institute of India / National Wildlife Database). The largest is Kutch Desert Wildlife Sanctuary (Gujarat, ~7,506 sq km) and the smallest is Kutch Bustard Sanctuary (Gujarat, ~2 sq km). Andaman & Nicobar Islands has the most wildlife sanctuaries (97). UPSC tests sanctuary–species matching, sanctuary–state location, and the NP-vs-WLS legal distinction.
Don't confuse National Park vs Wildlife Sanctuary: A National Park has stricter protection — no human activity/grazing is allowed and boundaries are fixed by law; a Sanctuary permits certain regulated activities (grazing, collection) at the Chief Wildlife Warden's discretion and can be up/down-graded. Several famous "sanctuaries" people name are actually National Parks (e.g. Dachigam for the hangul is a National Park).

| Superlative | Sanctuary | State | Fact |
|---|---|---|---|
| Most WLS in a State/UT | — | Andaman & Nicobar Islands | 97 wildlife sanctuaries |

| Smallest WLS (area) | Kutch Bustard Sanctuary | Gujarat | ~2 sq km; Great Indian Bustard (Lala–Parjau) |
| Total WLS in India | 573 | — | ~1,23,762 sq km, ~3.76% of India |
Famous Species-Specific Sanctuaries (Frequently Tested)
| Sanctuary | State | Flagship Species / Why Tested |
|---|---|---|
| Gir Wildlife Sanctuary (+ Gir NP) | Gujarat | Only home of the Asiatic Lion in the wild |
| National Chambal Sanctuary | MP–Rajasthan–UP (tri-state) | Gharial, red-crowned roof turtle, Gangetic dolphin; along the Chambal River |
| Pakhal / Eturnagaram | Telangana | Deccan forests; tigers, blackbuck |
| Eaglenest WLS | Arunachal Pradesh | Birding hotspot; Bugun Liocichla (new bird species described 2006) |
| Dibang WLS | Arunachal Pradesh | Mishmi takin, red goral, Sclater's monal; within Dihang-Dibang Biosphere Reserve |
| Pobitora / Pabitora WLS | Assam | Highest density of one-horned rhino; "Mini Kaziranga" |
| Kutch Bustard Sanctuary | Gujarat | Great Indian Bustard (critically endangered) |
| Karera WLS | Madhya Pradesh | Was created for the Great Indian Bustard — being de-notified after the bird went locally extinct (a UPSC current-affairs trap) |
| Chilika (Nalabana) Bird Sanctuary | Odisha | Within Chilika Lagoon; migratory waterfowl |
| Bhitarkanika WLS | Odisha | Saltwater crocodile; mangroves (also a National Park core) |
| Vedanthangal Bird Sanctuary | Tamil Nadu | One of India's oldest bird sanctuaries; Ramsar |
| Dandeli / Dandeli-Anshi (Kali Tiger Reserve) | Karnataka | Hornbills; black panther sightings |
Exam trap: Dachigam (the famous Hangul / Kashmir stag habitat in J&K) is a National Park, not a sanctuary. Likewise the one-horned rhino's flagship site Kaziranga is a National Park (Pobitora is the sanctuary with the highest rhino density).
Legal Status — NP vs WLS vs Conservation/Community Reserve
| Category | Key feature | Declared / altered by |
|---|---|---|
| National Park | Highest protection; no human activity, grazing or rights; fixed by legislation | State Legislature (boundary change needs its approval) |
| Wildlife Sanctuary | Regulated activities allowed at CWW's discretion; can be re-categorised | State Government notification |
| Conservation Reserve | Buffer/corridor land owned by government; managed with local community | State Govt (after consulting local communities) |
| Community Reserve | Private/community land voluntarily conserved | State Govt (on community proposal) |
Note: All National Parks and Sanctuaries are notified under the Wild Life (Protection) Act, 1972. Conservation and Community Reserves were added by the 2002 Amendment to the Act.
Quick UPSC Pointers
- 573 wildlife sanctuaries; A&N Islands most (97); Kutch Desert largest; Kutch Bustard smallest (as of March 2025).
- Gir = only wild Asiatic lions. National Chambal = gharial (tri-state).
- Pobitora = highest rhino density ("Mini Kaziranga"). Eaglenest = Bugun Liocichla.
- Dachigam (hangul) and Kaziranga (rhino) are National Parks, not sanctuaries — classic trap.
