About This Book
Understanding Society: India and Beyond is the new integrated Social Science textbook for Class IX (Grade 9), introduced under NEP 2020 / NCF-SE 2023 for the 2026-27 session (First Edition, June 2026; ISBN 978-93-5729-100-2). It replaces the four separate Class IX books (India and the Contemporary World-1, Contemporary India-1, Democratic Politics-1, Economics) with a single integrated book that merges Geography, History, Political Science and Economics into connected themes.
This is Part 1 (9 chapters); Part 2 is awaited from NCERT and will be added here once released.
Key features of the new approach:
- Integrated framing — the four disciplines are taught together so students see society as one connected story
- Explicit Indian Knowledge Systems anchors (Panchamahabhutas, Arthashastra, itihasa-purana tradition)
- Inquiry-based signposts: The Big Questions, Let's Explore, Think About It, Let's Analyse, Let's Map, Timelines, Before we move on
- QR codes linking to interactive digital content

How to Use This Book for UPSC
Understanding Society (Class IX Social Science) is a foundation text that maps directly onto the UPSC GS syllabus — its four disciplines are exactly GS1 (Geography, History), GS2 (Polity), and GS3 (Economy). The integrated framing is itself a UPSC skill: the exam rewards candidates who connect a topic across papers, and this book models that.
Smart-study approach:
- Read for concepts and connections, not date-memorisation — the book's own message is that Social Science is "about understanding people, places, society, culture and power," not rote facts.
- Follow the "PART 3 — UPSC Integration" in each chapter — it maps the school concept to the actual exam (GS papers, schemes, current affairs, landmark judgments/amendments).
- Use the Revision Capsule (Hard Facts / Confused Pairs / PYQ Pattern) for last-mile revision.
- Cross-link to current affairs via Ujiyari so a static concept becomes an exam-ready, date-stamped fact.
Who should read this: beginners building the GS1-GS3 foundation, and revisers wanting a fast, concept-first refresher of the school-level social science the exam assumes.
