Overview

The Indian Economy topic covers the entire GS3 economics syllabus — from macroeconomic fundamentals and planning history to sector-specific deep dives on agriculture, banking, trade, taxation, employment, and infrastructure. India is the 5th largest economy by nominal GDP and 3rd by PPP, yet ranks 134th on the Human Development Index — a paradox that defines every UPSC economics question.

This topic is divided into 57 detailed chapters arranged in optimal UPSC pedagogical order: macro foundations → fiscal & monetary → external sector & trade → industry & infrastructure → agriculture → social development. Work through them sequentially for a complete understanding, or jump to any chapter for targeted revision.

Exam Strategy: Economy is the heaviest GS3 subject — expect 4-6 Prelims questions and at least one dedicated Mains question every year. For Prelims, memorise current-year numbers (GDP growth, fiscal deficit, repo rate, GST collections). For Mains, build analytical frameworks connecting fiscal policy to growth, trade to manufacturing, and reform intent to ground-level outcomes.
