Where this sits
The Prelims syllabus asks for this as: "Pre-historical sites of Rajasthan- from Palaeolithic to Chalcolithic and Bronze Age, Society and Culture of ancient Rajasthan" (RPSC Prelims syllabus, notified 09-01-2026).
The same ground opens a wider unit in the Mains syllabus. So everything here has to work twice.
What changes between Prelims and Mains is not the content. It is what you do with it.
Prelims wants: Bagor is on which river. Who excavated Kalibangan. Which site has the ploughed field.
Mains wants: why does Rajasthan have two separate Chalcolithic cultures instead of one. What does a fortified Chalcolithic village imply about social organisation. Why is the Ganeshwar chronology unreliable, and does that matter.
Same facts, different question. Most candidates prepare only for the first, which is why Mains answers on this topic tend to be lists with an introduction stapled on.
So this chapter runs the facts once, then flags them twice: boxed for the objective paper, argued for the descriptive one.
1. Start with the water, not the sites
Here is the thing nobody tells you at the start, and it makes the whole unit easier to hold in your head.
Rajasthan's prehistory happened in four different places, and those four places had four different relationships with water and metal. Get the geography first and the sites arrange themselves.
- The western desert margin — the Luni and its tributaries were once perennial rivers. Their courses were later choked by wind-blown sand, which spread across much of the alluvial plain, the physical signature of an arid phase setting in. This is Tilwara country, and the Mesolithic here is about surviving a landscape that was drying out underneath the people living on it.
- The northern river plain — the Ghaggar, which the Archaeological Survey identifies with the ancient Sarasvati, carried Kalibangan and Baror before its bed went dry. This is the Bronze Age, and it is urban.
- The south-eastern Banas basin — sheltered by the Aravallis, watered, farmable. Villages. This is Ahar–Banas.
- The north-eastern Aravalli foothills — near the Khetri copper belt. Not especially good farmland, but copper. This is Ganeshwar–Jodhpura.
Now notice what that last pairing does. Two Chalcolithic cultures existed in the same state at overlapping times, and they look nothing alike, because one sat on farmland and the other sat on ore. The geography is the explanation. If you can say that in a Mains answer, you are already writing analysis instead of recall.
2. Palaeolithic: Didwana, and why the boring detail is the important one
Didwana-Kuchaman district. Didwana. Handaxes.
That district name matters and it is new. Didwana was a Nagaur tehsil until 2023, so every book, every ASI page and every older answer key places this site in Nagaur. Didwana-Kuchaman was carved out of Nagaur in 2023 and survived the December 2024 cull, so Nagaur is now the wrong answer.
The dates first, because there are two and they disagree, and knowing that is worth more than knowing either one.
Several primary Acheulian sites around Didwana were dated, on lithostratigraphy plus a few radiocarbon, uranium-thorium and thermoluminescence dates, to the late Middle Pleistocene, around 200,000 years before present. The assemblages have handaxes, cleavers, choppers, chopping tools, polyhedrons, spheroids, scrapers, denticulates, flakes and cores, on quartzite and quartz (Misra, Rajaguru and Raghavan, PINSA 54, 1988).
Then there is Singi Talav, the best-studied locality, south-west of Didwana, excavated 1981 to 1985 under V. N. Misra and S. N. Rajaguru. Two main archaeological layers of sandy silt, and this deposit was subsequently dated to 800,000 years (Gaillard and Rajaguru, 2017).
Two numbers, different studies, different methods. Neither has cancelled the other. If a Prelims option gives you one, take it; if a Mains question invites you to discuss the chronology, the honest answer is that Didwana's dating is unresolved, and you should say why.
But the detail that actually matters at Didwana is duller and better.
The artefacts occur mostly buried in the calcareous loam of the Amarpura Formation, in remarkably fresh condition, which combined with the geological setting effectively rules out their having been washed there and dumped by water. Didwana is one of the rare Indian open-air Acheulian sites in genuine primary context.
Why care? Because most Palaeolithic stone tools in India are found in river gravels, meaning you have the tool but no idea where it was used. Primary context means the tools are roughly where people left them. That is the difference between having evidence and having an object.
Singi Talav adds a scene. Fossil gastropods occur almost exclusively in the occupation layers, which suggests the group settled beside a pond in a playa, well away from any perennial river. They also carried their raw material in: no suitable stone nearby, the nearest sources three kilometres off in a hill, and they selected quartzite, schistose quartzite and quartz differently for different jobs. In layer 4, handaxes are 2.7 per cent of the assemblage; cleavers are very few.
Camped by a seasonal pond in a dry landscape, hauling stone in from three kilometres away, choosing different rock for different tasks. That is a paragraph you can write in Mains. "Handaxes were found at Didwana" is not.
Budha Pushkar, where the climate is the record
Didwana gives you tools sitting where they were used. Budha Pushkar, beside the Pushkar valley in Ajmer district, gives you something Didwana cannot: a stack of climate.
Bridget Allchin and the geographer Andrew Goudie worked the Pushkar basin and read it as a sequence of three arid phases in the later Pleistocene. Each phase left a major sand sheet with fossil desert dunes, and the three are separated by what happened in between.
- The earliest sand sheet contains lenses of detritus carrying rolled Lower Palaeolithic tools. Rolled is the operative word. These have been moved by water, so unlike Didwana this is not primary context.
- Between the penultimate and the last arid phases lies a mature soil, and a mature soil forms only under sustained moisture. It records a period considerably wetter than the present day. On it sit Middle and Upper Palaeolithic working floors.
- On the surface of the last sand sheet are Mesolithic working floors and later occupation.
Read it from the bottom up and you get the whole of the Stone Age laid against the coming and going of the desert: people at Pushkar through arid phases, through a wet interval, and out the other side. That is why this site is worth a paragraph rather than a line. The syllabus phrase is "Palaeolithic to Chalcolithic", and Budha Pushkar is the place in Rajasthan where that span is held together by climate rather than by a list of sites (Allchin and Goudie, World Archaeology 5(3), 1974).
Pushkar remains a tehsil of Ajmer after the 2023 reorganisation, even though Kekri and Beawar were carved away from that district. Ajmer is still the right answer here.
MCQ WATCH — Palaeolithic
Direct fact: Singi Talav is near Didwana, in Didwana-Kuchaman district (Nagaur in every source written before 2023). Excavated 1981–1985 by V. N. Misra and S. N. Rajaguru. Tool tradition: Acheulian. Raw materials: quartzite, schistose quartzite, quartz. Formation name: Amarpura.
Statement-based trap: two dates are in play, 800,000 years for the Singi Talav deposit and c. 200,000 years BP for the Didwana sites generally. A statement pairing the wrong figure with the wrong study is the obvious trap. So is a statement calling Didwana a river-side site: the evidence points to a pond in a playa, away from any perennial river.
Easily confused: "primary context" means the tools lie roughly where they were used, not that they are the oldest. A statement equating the two is false.
Budha Pushkar in one line: Ajmer district; three arid phases of the later Pleistocene, each a sand sheet with fossil dunes; rolled Lower Palaeolithic tools in the earliest; a mature soil wetter than today carrying Middle and Upper Palaeolithic floors; Mesolithic floors on the last sand sheet. The contrast worth holding: Didwana is primary context, Budha Pushkar's Lower Palaeolithic tools are rolled, so secondary. A statement calling Budha Pushkar a primary-context site is false.
3. Mesolithic: Bagor is the site to actually learn
If you properly learn only one prehistoric site in Rajasthan, learn this one. It is the best published, it is asked about constantly, and it does something no other site in the state does.
- The basics — left bank of the Kothari, a tributary of the Banas, about 25 km west of Bhilwara, on a large sand dune known locally as Mahasati, in the centre of the Mewar plain in the shadow of the Aravallis. The site covers roughly 10,000 square metres.
- Discovery — January 1967, by V. N. Misra with Dr L. S. Leshnik of the University of Heidelberg, as part of a long-term project Misra had begun in 1958 under H. D. Sankalia.
- Excavation — three seasons, 1968 to 1970, jointly by the Department of Archaeology of Poona University, Deccan College, and the Department of Archaeology and Museums of the State of Rajasthan.
That third institution gets dropped from almost every summary you will read. Rajasthan's own department was a full partner in excavating Rajasthan's most important prehistoric site. Naming all three signals that you read past the guide.
Three phases, distinguished by changes in material culture, with no stratigraphic break visible at any stage:
- Phase I, c. 5000–2800 BC. The lower 50–80 cm. Microliths and animal remains at their densest. An economy combining hunting-gathering with herding. Huts with stone-paved floors, probably wattle walls, or people simply sheltering behind wind breaks. Dead buried extended, east–west.
- Phase II, c. 2800–600 BC. The next 30–50 cm.
- Phase III, c. 600 BC – AD 200. Only in the central part of the mound.
The animals, which is the fact most guides bury. Bagor's Phase I faunal assemblage is one of the earliest bodies of evidence for domesticated sheep, goat and cattle in the Indian subcontinent, roughly the fifth millennium BC. That is the exam-worthy claim about domestication at Bagor. It is not the horse. See the caution below.
Now the artefacts, and this is the part worth pausing on. Alongside the microliths: querns and grinders, a perforated disc, hand-made pottery sherds, bone and dentalium shell beads, a copper knife from the middle level, wheel-made pottery, an iron arrowhead and pieces of iron, and charred animal bones including a rhinoceros shoulder blade.
Read that list as a sequence rather than an inventory. Stone tools. Then copper. Then wheel-thrown pots. Then iron. One dune, and the excavator reports no stratigraphic break across the whole of it.
So here is the Mains argument Bagor hands you for free: the arrival of metal did not wipe out the microlith-using communities. They kept making microliths while copper, then pottery, then iron entered their world. Technological change here looks like accumulation, not replacement. That is a genuinely interesting claim, and it is sitting in the excavation report waiting for someone to use it.
Burials. Five human burials of differing cultural association. A later reanalysis assigned Specimen 1 to the Mesolithic (4480–3285 BCE), Specimens 2, 3 and 5 to the Chalcolithic (2765–2110 BCE), and Specimen 4 to the medieval or Islamic period. That reanalysis is a research paper, not a government publication; cite it as such if you use those dates.
Tilwara, the western counterpart
Tilwara sits on the Luni, in Pachpadra tehsil, which is now in Balotra district and was in Barmer until 2023. It is usually described as the westernmost Mesolithic site in India, on the fringe of the desert. Excavation on a low dune exposed a large Mesolithic settlement, part of the same phase of V. N. Misra's fieldwork as Bagor. The reported excavation is 1967-68, by the Rajasthan State Department of Archaeology, directed by V. N. Misra, and it produced two distinct phases, of which the earlier is the clearly Mesolithic one. The industry has trapezes, lunates and points besides numerous parallel-sided blades and fluted cores, alongside crude pottery.
A caution worth carrying: Tilwara's details rest on the Indian Archaeology — A Review entry and on secondary summaries of it, not on a published monograph. The excavation year and the directing institution are consistently reported, but the frequently repeated fine detail about hearths and animal counts is not traceable to a primary source. Treat the outline as sound and the decoration as unverified.
Rock art: the part of the syllabus with no textbook
The syllabus says "Palaeolithic to Chalcolithic", and rock paintings run right through that span. National textbooks send you to Bhimbetka in Madhya Pradesh and stop. Rajasthan has its own body of rock art, and the story behind it is one an interview board would enjoy.
More than a hundred rock art sites have been recorded in the Bundi–Bhilwara–Tonk belt, along the Chambal and its tributaries. The paintings span the Mesolithic, Chalcolithic and metal ages, and depict deer, bison and humans driving domestic animals. The Bhimlat site near Bundi is the best known of them.
Almost all of these were found by one person: Om Prakash Sharma, known as "Kukki", a resident of Bundi with no institutional backing and no funding, who located the sites on foot over decades, including the longest continuous painted stretch, about 35 km. He was honoured by then President Pratibha Patil for discovering more than 76 rock painting sites, and the ASI conferred on him the status of honorary archaeologist.
For Prelims, remember Bundi, the Chambal basin and Kukki's name. For an interview, the useful observation is that Rajasthan's largest single addition to its own prehistoric record in living memory came from outside the professional archaeological system entirely, which raises a fair question about how state archaeology is staffed and funded.
MCQ WATCH — Mesolithic and rock art
Direct fact: Bagor is on the Kothari (a tributary of the Banas), about 25 km west of Bhilwara, on the dune called Mahasati. Discovered January 1967 by V. N. Misra and L. S. Leshnik (University of Heidelberg). Excavated 1968–1970, three seasons. Statement-based trap: the excavating bodies at Bagor were three — Poona University's Department of Archaeology, Deccan College, and the Rajasthan State Department of Archaeology and Museums. A statement naming only Deccan College is incomplete; a statement naming the ASI is wrong.
Sequence question: Phase I c. 5000–2800 BC, Phase II c. 2800–600 BC, Phase III c. 600 BC – AD 200. Burials in Phase I are extended, east–west.
The high-value one: copper knife from the middle level, iron arrowhead present, no stratigraphic break across the whole sequence. A statement saying microliths were replaced by metal is false; they continue alongside it.
Domestication: sheep, goat and cattle — among the earliest such evidence in the subcontinent. Not the horse. An option offering "earliest evidence of horse domestication at Bagor" is the trap, not the answer.
"Largest Mesolithic site in India": widely stated in exam material and in secondary literature (area about 10,000 sq m, and the largest set of radiocarbon dates of any Indian Mesolithic site). Treat it as a standard answer if offered, but the defensible version is "the largest and most securely dated", not a measured ranking from a primary report.
Rock art: the concentration is in the Bundi–Bhilwara–Tonk belt of the Chambal basin, best-known site Bhimlat (Bundi); found largely by Om Prakash Sharma "Kukki", an ASI honorary archaeologist honoured by President Pratibha Patil; 100+ sites, longest painted stretch about 35 km. A statement placing Rajasthan's main rock-art belt in the Aravalli desert margin, or crediting the ASI with the discoveries, is false.
4. The Chalcolithic: stop treating it as one thing
This is where most preparation quietly falls apart.
Rajasthan's Chalcolithic is two cultures, not one. They overlap in time. They differ in almost everything else. And examiners know that candidates blur them.

That last row is the one to remember. It explains why one culture is described consistently across the literature and the other is described three different ways depending on which book you open.
4a. Ahar–Banas
Ahar, on the Ahar river at Udaipur, is the type-site. It carries two names worth memorising: Tambavati, "the place of copper", and the local name of the mound itself, Dhulkot, "the mound of dust". The culture is equally often called the Banas culture, after the river valley where most of its sites were first found.
The site was first excavated in 1952 under R. C. Agrawala of the Rajasthan State Department of Archaeology, with further seasons reported in 1954-55 and 1955-56; H. D. Sankalia of Deccan College then excavated it with S. B. Deo and Z. D. Ansari in 1961-62. The definitive publication is Excavations at Ahar (Tambavati) [1961-62] by Sankalia, Deo and Ansari, Deccan College, 1969, still the primary reference in the peer-reviewed literature. The Chalcolithic pottery had been reported by the ASI in Indian Archaeology 1954-55 — A Review, at page 14. Some summaries compress Agrawala's work to "1954-56" and others to "1952-53 and 1953-54"; the safe formulation is that Agrawala began in 1952 and the Review entries fall in 1954-55 and 1955-56.
Heaps of copper slag from the Chalcolithic levels are what earn the site its "Tambavati" name; celts, rings, bangles and knives were recovered.
The stone-tool question, which is a trap in both directions. The people of Ahar itself practically neither made nor used microliths, and stone axes and blades are almost absent there. That is genuinely unusual for a Chalcolithic farming culture and it is the standard textbook point. But it is a statement about the site, not about the culture: Gilund had a prominent stone-blade industry, and the ASI's own account of Gilund Period I records copper "with a few microliths". So "the Ahar culture had no microliths" is false as a generalisation, while "microliths are practically absent at Ahar" is true. Examiners can build a statement pair out of exactly that gap.
Gilund. Excavated by B. B. Lal for one season in 1959-60, about 70 km from Udaipur and 11.5 km off the right bank of the Banas. Period I has copper with a few microliths, four structural sub-periods, mud-brick walls averaging 32.5 × 12.5 × 10 cm, mud-plastered, and at one spot zigzag finger marks still visible in the plaster. Circular clay-lined ovens, open-mouthed hearths, storage pits with nothing left in them. They knew kiln-burnt brick too: a large wall in the southern part of the western mound proves it.
The signature is a Black-and-Red Ware painted in a creamish-white pigment, with plain and painted black, burnished grey and red wares alongside, and terracotta bulls with prominent humps and long horns.
Hold on to those bulls. They come back.
The ASI's own dating reasoning is worth knowing because it shows how relative chronology works. Gilund's Period I pottery compares to Navdatoli's but sits mostly earlier, with overlap at the end; Navdatoli's early levels are radiocarbon-placed around the middle of the second millennium BC; therefore Gilund Period I falls broadly in the second quarter of that millennium, possibly earlier.
Gilund did not stop in 1960, and this is the part exam material misses. A joint Deccan College and University of Pennsylvania Museum project under Vasant Shinde and Gregory Possehl worked at Gilund from 1999 to 2005. Its most striking find was a large bin containing more than 100 seal impressions, from seals both round and rectilinear, with design parallels at Indus sites including Chanhu-daro, Kot Diji and Nindowari, several hundred kilometres away. A village culture that was stamping and sealing goods is a very different proposition from a village culture that was not, and this is the single best piece of evidence for administrative practice in the Ahar–Banas world.
One trap. The Survey's excavation page puts Gilund in Udaipur district, correct for 1959-60, before Rajsamand existed. The Jaipur Circle's monument list puts it in Rajsamand. Both are ASI. The current answer is Rajsamand.
Balathal is the site where the excavators publicly corrected themselves, and that correction is very examinable.
Balathal is in Vallabhnagar tehsil, Udaipur district, and was discovered by V. N. Misra during a survey in 1962-63. It was excavated from 1994 to 2000, jointly by the Department of Archaeology of Deccan College, Pune and the Institute of Rajasthan Studies, Rajasthan Vidyapeeth, Udaipur, under the direction of V. N. Misra.
The first report, covering the 1994 and 1995 seasons, described Chalcolithic and Iron Age components, multi-roomed dwellings, copper implements and ceramics; contact with the Harappans around 2500 BC visible in stone-and-mud-brick house construction resembling Harappan sites in Gujarat; and the suggestion that Reserve-Slipped ware found at Mohenjo-daro may have originated at Balathal. Occupation was placed at 2500 BC to 1800 BC.
The second report established that the fortified enclosure at the centre of the mound is Chalcolithic, not Iron Age as first reported, and identified rising prosperity around 2400 BC in Phase II, attributed to contact with the Harappans of Gujarat and most visible in the changed architecture. The full run of excavation took the antiquity of village life in the region back to about 3000 BC and separated the Chalcolithic into Early, Mature and Late phases, with traces of proto-urbanisation.
Think about what that correction means. A farming community in the Chalcolithic, not a later Iron Age polity, built a fortified enclosure. Fortification implies something worth defending and someone organising the defence. That is a Mains paragraph on social complexity, sourced.
And then there is the skeleton, which is the most quotable fact about Balathal and the one most guides leave out. A male of about 37 years, recovered in 1997, was buried in a tightly flexed posture on his left side, inside a stone enclosure, within undisturbed layers of burned cow dung. Radiocarbon places the burial between about 2500 and 2000 BCE. The skeleton shows rhinomaxillary syndrome, diagnostic of lepromatous leprosy, and the study concluded that leprosy was present in India by 2000 BC and that this is the oldest documented skeletal evidence of the disease anywhere in the world (Robbins et al., PLoS ONE, 27-05-2009; the co-authors include Misra, Mohanty and Shinde, the site's own excavators).
Two things follow that are worth saying in an answer rather than just reciting. First, a chronic disabling disease in a village of this date implies someone was caring for a person who could not fully provide for himself. Second, the burial inside an ash mound of vitrified cow dung is a ritual context, not a casual disposal. Both point at social organisation, which is exactly the direction a Mains question on Chalcolithic society wants you to go.
Ojiyana is the one to push towards if you want a site nobody else in the exam hall will write about properly, because the ASI published the whole excavation itself.
Excavated by the ASI Jaipur Circle from 2000, directed by B. R. Meena and Alok Tripathi. About 30 km south-west of Beawar, in the hills of Bhilwara district, near Asind. Beawar itself became a separate district in 2023, carved partly out of Bhilwara, so the town is no longer a Bhilwara landmark even though the site is still a Bhilwara one. And here is what makes it strange: it sits on a hill slope, unlike every other Ahar-culture site, all of which flourished in river valleys. The northern slope yielded a single culture deposit about 7.5 m thick, possibly the deepest of any excavated Ahar site, in three phases.
The three phases tell a story with a beginning, a middle and an ending, which is rare in this material.
The first settlers were probably cultivators, using white-painted Black-and-Red Ware, who seem to have come up from the plains and built directly on the natural rock: mud-brick houses, judging from thin mud floors under thick construction debris.
Mud brick does not work on a hillside. By Phase II they had switched to local stone and built the best structure at the site: four chambers on a platform north of a street 1.25 m wide, one chamber with a low platform along the south wall for vessels and a big saddle-quern set into the floor, the chamber next to it a kitchen with three hearths of different sizes in a row, plus an open courtyard and living rooms. Stone walls, mud-brick partitions.
Then Phase III: wattle and daub. A sharp decline. And a thick layer of ash, burnt and baked mud plaster, post-holes capped with charcoal, evidence of a devastating fire that ended the settlement.
You can teach a whole lesson on Chalcolithic village life from that one paragraph. A kitchen with three hearths of graded size. A grinding stone fixed into the floor. And then it burns down.
The finds include a large number of terracotta bulls, naturalistic and stylised, in great variety, and the white paint applied to them makes these unparalleled among contemporary Indian cultures, enough that they can be called Ojiyana bulls, probably cult objects with the paint applied at ceremonies. Terracotta cows too, modelled with enough variety to suggest the practice was common, also probably cult objects. Plus a small copper chopper made from thin sheet, and faience of Harappan type establishing contact with contemporaries.
So: humped bulls at Gilund, painted bulls at Ojiyana. Across a farming culture spread over the Banas basin, the bull keeps turning up in terracotta. Both sources call the Ojiyana examples probable cult objects. That is as far as the evidence goes, and it is far enough to be interesting without overclaiming.
Dating at Ojiyana is relative, from comparison with other sites: third millennium BC to the middle of the second.
How big the culture actually is, and the four sites nobody teaches
The four sites above are the ones every list carries. They are not the culture.
The Ahar culture is now counted at more than 100 known Chalcolithic sites, spread across south-eastern Rajasthan and north-eastern Madhya Pradesh, and running from about 3000 to 1700 BCE. Only a handful have ever been dug. Knowing that ratio is itself worth a sentence in Mains: what we say about Ahar–Banas rests on perhaps seven excavated sites standing in for a hundred.
Three of those excavations are recent enough that most exam material has not caught up with them.
The Mewar Plain Archaeological Assessment is a joint project of Deccan College (Pune), Rajasthan Vidyapeeth (Udaipur) and Kennesaw State University in the United States. Under it, three sites in Rajsamand district were excavated: Chatrikhera, Jawasiya-Arni and Pachamta.
Pachamta is the one to know. It was dug for two seasons, 2014 to 2016, as a salvage excavation, because the living village sits on top of the ancient mound. There are five mounds, all carrying Ahar-culture deposits, with some Early Historic and Medieval material above. The village takes its name from Panchamata, the five goddess temples standing one on each mound. The main mound was not a new discovery: K. N. Puri had found it decades earlier, reported in Indian Archaeology 1957-58 — A Review.
What came out of Mound 1 is the reason this matters. It was a large parallel wall structure with several bins, closely similar to the one already known from Gilund. Careful analysis places its construction across multiple phases between 2000 and 1700 BC.
That single finding changes the shape of the argument. A parallel-walled, binned building at Gilund alone is an oddity, and an oddity can be explained away. The same building at a second site makes it an architectural type of the Ahar culture, which means storage on a scale beyond one household was normal here rather than exceptional. Put that beside Gilund's hundred-plus seal impressions and the picture of a village culture managing and marking stored goods stops being a guess.
Purani Marmi, in Chittorgarh district, adds one more piece to a pattern this chapter has already traced twice. It too produced terracotta bull figurines (Misra, Shinde, Mohanty and Pandey, Man and Environment 18(2), 1993). Humped bulls at Gilund, white-painted bulls at Ojiyana, bulls again at Marmi. Across the Banas basin the bull is the recurring object of this culture, and three sites is enough to call it a pattern rather than a coincidence.
MCQ WATCH — Ahar–Banas
Direct fact: Ahar is the type-site, at Udaipur, also called Tambavati ("place of copper") and locally Dhulkot ("mound of dust"); the culture is also named the Banas culture. Begun by R. C. Agrawala, 1952 (further seasons 1954-55, 1955-56), excavated by Sankalia, Deo and Ansari, 1961-62, report published 1969 by Deccan College. Gilund excavated by B. B. Lal, 1959-60, off the right bank of the Banas; re-excavated 1999–2005 by Shinde and Possehl. Balathal in Vallabhnagar tehsil, Udaipur, discovered by V. N. Misra, 1962-63, excavated 1994–2000. Ojiyana about 30 km south-west of Beawar, Bhilwara district, excavated from 2000 by B. R. Meena and Alok Tripathi.
Match-the-following material: Gilund → humped bull figurines, mud brick 32.5 × 12.5 × 10 cm, kiln-burnt brick wall, 100+ seal impressions, a stone-blade industry. Ojiyana → white-painted bulls, 7.5 m single-culture deposit, three hearths in a row, ended by fire, hill slope. Balathal → fortified enclosure, Reserve-Slipped ware link to Mohenjo-daro, the world's oldest leprosy skeleton. Ahar → copper slag heaps, Tambavati / Dhulkot, microliths practically absent.
The Balathal skeleton, in one line: male aged about 37, buried c. 2500–2000 BCE in a stone enclosure within burned cow dung, showing rhinomaxillary syndrome and so lepromatous leprosy — the oldest documented skeletal evidence of leprosy in the world (PLoS ONE, 2009). Note it is leprosy, not tuberculosis or plague, and the site is Balathal, not Ahar or Kalibangan.
Statement-based trap 0 — microliths. "Microliths are practically absent at Ahar" is true. "The Ahar culture did not use microliths" is false — Gilund had a stone-blade industry and its Period I yielded a few microliths.
Statement-based trap 1 — Gilund's district. ASI's excavation page says Udaipur (correct for 1959-60); the Jaipur Circle list says Rajsamand (correct now). Both are ASI. The current answer is Rajsamand.
Statement-based trap 2 — Balathal's fortification. First reported as Iron Age, later corrected to Chalcolithic. A statement calling it Iron Age reflects the superseded position.
Statement-based trap 3 — Ojiyana's setting. It sits on a hill slope; every other Ahar-culture site is in a river valley. Any statement generalising "all Ahar sites are riverine" is false because of Ojiyana.
Statement-based trap 4 — how many sites. The culture has over 100 known sites but only about seven excavated. A statement treating the excavated handful as the whole culture overstates what is known.
The recent excavations: Chatrikhera, Jawasiya-Arni and Pachamta, all in Rajsamand, under the Mewar Plain Archaeological Assessment (Deccan College, Rajasthan Vidyapeeth and Kennesaw State University). Pachamta dug 2014–2016 as a salvage project; five mounds; named from the Panchamata temples; main mound first found by K. N. Puri (IAR 1957-58); parallel wall structure with bins like Gilund's, built 2000–1700 BC.
Terracotta bulls, all three sites: Gilund humped, Ojiyana white-painted, Purani Marmi (Chittorgarh). A question naming only one site as "the" bull site is ignoring the other two.
Culture span and spread: about 3000 to 1700 BCE, across south-eastern Rajasthan and north-eastern Madhya Pradesh.
Signature ceramic for the culture: white-painted Black-and-Red Ware.
4b. Ganeshwar–Jodhpura
Different world. Same centuries.
The culture spreads over north-eastern Rajasthan: Jhunjhunun, Sikar, Jaipur, Tonk, Bhilwara, Sawai Madhopur and Bharatpur, concentrated in Sikar, Jhunjhunun and Jaipur, with a single reported site in Jaisalmer. That list is as the 2021 research states it, using pre-2023 districts; parts of it now fall in Kotputli-Behror and Deeg. Exploration has recorded roughly five hundred sites.
It surfaced in the 1970s, first through Jodhpura and then decisively through Ganeshwar. Jodhpura was excavated for one season, beginning with the 1972-73 season under R. C. Agrawala of the Rajasthan State Department of Archaeology, with Vijay Kumar as excavation officer. Copper material from Ganeshwar was first documented in 1977, when the department examined the "Neem Ka Thana Treasury Hoard", leading to excavation seasons between 1979 and 1984 under Vijay Kumar and P. L. Chakraborty, with a further season in 2013 when R. N. Singh and Cameron Petrie re-examined the site. On quantity, the sources diverge and the difference is worth knowing: later scholarship speaks of over 1,000 copper implements documented from Ganeshwar, while the 1987-88 Review describes "such a rich find of copper objects numbering several hundred at a single small site". Both agree the concentration is extraordinary for a small mound near the mines; the totals do not agree, so answer on the concentration rather than a figure.
Type-sites: Ganeshwar in Neem Ka Thana tehsil, Sikar district; Jodhpura in Kotputli tehsil, now Kotputli-Behror district and Jaipur until 2023. No final excavation report was ever published for either.
That last fact is the key to the whole culture. Everything anyone knows about Ganeshwar comes from annual Review entries and a handful of later studies. There is no monograph, which is why the dates wander.
The copper. Arrowheads, spearheads, chisels, fish hooks, razor blades; rings, hairpins, bangles, antimony rods, a double-spiral-headed pin.
But this is the detail that will separate your answer from everyone else's, and it is now quoted from the Review for 1987-88 itself, read directly. The excavation that season was by P. L. Chakravarty and Vijai Kumar, continuing work from 1983-84, with six trenches (Q to V) laid to re-examine the sequence in the lower levels. It found three phases:
- Phase I (30–50 cm) is "a true mesolithic hunting-gathering settlement" — microliths and animal bones, quartz and chert, a geometric industry, and a striking technical absence: no crested guiding ridge technique, which the report notes is "ubiquitously characteristic of India". The bones are all wild animals, small game and birds at the bottom, larger animals later, charred and split open for marrow. No copper at all.
- Phase II (40–60 cm) brings a spearhead and an awl, which "testifies the introduction of copper at Ganeshwar", along with the Ganeshwar-Jodhpura Ware, paved floors of river pebbles and schist slabs, and circular hut outlines. Microliths continue in good number.
- Phase III is "the copper age in fullness of its evolution", where copper implements are "most profuse, accounting 99 per cent of the total material". Microliths and animal bones show "a slow but steady decline".
That last line is the real prize. The Review reads the sequence as "an insight into the process whereby mesolithic hunter-gatherers adopted their way of life to copper age" — a single small mound recording the transition itself, not just its outcome.
So the standard line, that Ganeshwar was a copper-producing centre supplying the Harappans, is true only of the site's later life. It did not start that way. Almost no candidate will know this.
A numbering caution, because it trips people up. The four IAR reports set out three main periods at Ganeshwar: Period I Mesolithic / Late Stone Age, Period II Chalcolithic (in two phases), Period III Iron Age. The "phases" in the copper-production statement above are the culture's internal phases as used in the chronology literature, not those IAR period numbers. If a question sets "Period I" against "Phase I", read it carefully: Period I is pre-metal because it is Mesolithic, which is the same underlying fact from a different angle.
The pottery. Initially identified as Ochre Coloured Pottery, plain and painted, with incised designs and graffiti; later work added Thin Dull Red Ware, Sturdy Red Slipped Ware, Pink to Buff Ware, Fine Ware, Dull Red Ware and Reserve Slip Ware. The genuinely diagnostic type is Ganeshwar Reserve Slip Ware, present in every Chalcolithic layer and without parallel in any other culture. It turns up at Farmana and Rakhigarhi in Haryana, but only in tiny quantities and in Mature Harappan contexts. Characteristic shape: the carinated basin.
The dating problem, and the primary source says it outright. IAR 1987-88 dates the phases and then states the basis in the same breath: "Phase I of Ganeshwar can be dated around 3800 BC while Phase II emerged during 2800 BC. The Phase III was in existence in 2000 BC and lasted upto several centuries. This study is based on the basis of C14 study of Jodhpura", whose pottery is akin to the Ganeshwar assemblage. So the borrowed-chronology problem is not a modern scholarly complaint about the excavation — it is how the excavation report itself dated the site.
Three frameworks are in circulation:
- The excavation report itself (IAR 1987-88) — Phase I c. 3800 BCE, Phase II c. 2800 BCE, Phase III c. 2000 BCE onwards.
- Conventional — Jodhpura's upper levels at 2900–2500 BCE, so Ganeshwar at 2500–2000 BCE.
- Rizvi (2007) — Early 3000–2500 BCE (with Early Harappans), Middle 2500–2000 BCE (with Mature Harappans), Late 2000–1800 BCE.
- Prasad and Singh (2021) — Period I pre-2600 BCE, Period II 2600–2100 BCE.
Current scholarship has not overturned this. Prasad and Singh (2021) remains the latest reassessment, and a 2025 study in Journal of Anthropological Archaeology on Chalcolithic settlement along the Khetri belt extends the survey picture without resupplying Ganeshwar with absolute dates. The site still has none of its own.
For Prelims, expect the conventional one. For Mains, the fact that a culture's chronology rests on borrowed dates from a different site is itself the answer to any question about the reliability of Rajasthan's Chalcolithic sequence.
The Harappan link. Graffiti from Ganeshwar was compared with Kalibangan, Harappa, Mohenjo-daro and Farmana. The closest match is Kalibangan, plausibly just proximity. Around half the Ganeshwar graffiti resemble Harappan examples, and the comparable Kalibangan marks come from Period II, its mature phase. Add the S-shaped jar, a Harappan shape, appearing at Ganeshwar in Layer 2. And metal studies identify the culture as a copper manufacturer trading with the Harappans, the Ahar–Banas culture, and Kayatha in Madhya Pradesh.
Two labels to recognise rather than rely on. Rajasthan exam literature routinely calls Ganeshwar the "Pushkar of the copper age" (tamrayugin sabhyataon ka Pushkar). It is a coined phrase from the preparation world, not a term from the excavation reports, so recognise it in an option but do not offer it as scholarship in a written answer. Second, Kurada in Nagaur district belongs in your list of Rajasthan's copper finds: a hoard of copper objects, widely reported as 103 pieces found in 1934, which is why some material calls it a copper-age centre in its own right. That count and year circulate in exam material rather than in a primary report, so carry them as the standard answer with a mental asterisk.
MCQ WATCH — Ganeshwar–Jodhpura
Direct fact: type-sites are Ganeshwar (Neem Ka Thana tehsil, Sikar district) and Jodhpura (Kotputli tehsil, Kotputli-Behror district; Jaipur in older sources). Jodhpura from 1972-73 under R. C. Agrawala with Vijay Kumar; Ganeshwar copper documented 1977, excavations 1979–84. Diagnostic ware: Ganeshwar Reserve Slip Ware. Characteristic shape: carinated basin. Initially identified ware: Ochre Coloured Pottery (OCP). Roughly 500 sites recorded; over 1,000 copper objects.
Statement-based trap 1 — the copper. Large-scale copper production begins only at Phase III. Phase I is entirely devoid of copper. A statement that Ganeshwar was a copper-producing centre from its foundation is false.
Statement-based trap 2 — the dating. Ganeshwar has no absolute dates; the culture is dated from Jodhpura, whose upper levels give 2900–2500 BCE, placing Ganeshwar conventionally at 2500–2000 BCE. A statement claiming radiocarbon dates from Ganeshwar itself is false.
Assertion–reason material: the Harappan link rests on three things — graffiti resembling Kalibangan most closely (about half the Ganeshwar marks resemble Harappan ones), the S-shaped jar appearing in Layer 2, and metal studies. The reason given for the Kalibangan resemblance is geographical proximity, not cultural identity.
The distinction question: Ahar–Banas sits on farmland, Ganeshwar–Jodhpura on copper ore near the Khetri belt. Both are Chalcolithic and overlap in time.
5. Bronze Age: Kalibangan
The big one. The name means "black bangles", after the broken bangle fragments scattered over the mounds, and that translation is itself a direct-recall question.
Nine field seasons, by the ASI, under B. B. Lal and B. K. Thapar (the ASI memoirs are authored by B. B. Lal, Jagat Pati Joshi, A. K. Sharma, Madhu Bala and K. S. Ramachandran, with an appendix by A. Ghosh).
On the years, ASI's own two memoirs disagree, so do not treat either as an error. Part I is titled Excavations at Kalibangan, the Early Harappans, 1961-1969. Part II carries the running title Excavations at Kalibangan — The Harappans (1960-69) and records field supervision "during nine seasons of work, besides students of batches from 1960 to 1969". What both agree on is nine seasons ending in 1969. If a paper offers 1961-69, take it; if it offers 1960-69, that is ASI's Part II wording and cannot be called wrong. The site is on the left bank of the Ghaggar in Pilibanga tehsil, Hanumangarh district. Three mounds: KLB-2 largest in the middle, KLB-1 smaller to the west, KLB-3 smallest to the east.
On the discovery, get the two-step right. The mound was first noticed by the Italian Indologist Luigi Pio Tessitori during his Rajputana surveys around 1917-19, though he did not know what it was. It was Amlanand (Amalananda) Ghosh who, in 1952, identified Kalibangan as a Harappan site and marked it for excavation, which is why the ASI describes it as the first important Harappan settlement discovered after Independence. A question asking "who discovered Kalibangan" can be keyed to either name, so read whether it asks about the survey or the Harappan identification.
Twofold sequence: upper (Kalibangan I) Harappan with the grid layout of a metropolis; lower (Kalibangan II) Early Harappan. The ASI places the Early Harappan at roughly 3000–2700 BCE and the Mature Harappan at roughly 2600–1900 BCE.
Period I — the pre-Harappan town
Fortified from the very beginning of occupation, in mud brick. Houses inside of the same brick; baked brick appears in a drain, plus ovens and cylindrical pits lined with lime plaster.
The diagnostic is the pottery, first identified at Sothi, in six fabrics A to F:
- A — carelessly potted, painted in light-black, sometimes with white
- B — roughened or rusticated lower body, smooth-slipped above
- C — fine paste, all-over smooth slip in red, purple or plum-red; recalls pottery from Harappa's pre-defence deposits
- D — thick and sturdy; heavy jars, troughs, basins, with ridged incisions inside the basins
- E and F — mainly distinguished by surface colour, E buff and F grey; no real individuality of shape or design, and uncommon, F especially
A, B and D have an individuality that isolates them from the Harappan assemblage, which is exactly why this pottery identifies the pre-Harappan phase.
And Sothi is not somewhere else, it is in Rajasthan, which the standard summaries never say out loud. Sothi lies about 10 km south-west of Nohar, reported in the older literature as Bikaner district and now falling in Hanumangarh (Nohar changed districts in 1994), so it carries the same two-authorities problem as Gilund. First noticed by L. P. Tessitori, later visited by Aurel Stein and A. Ghosh. It is one of the two type-sites of the Sothi-Siswal culture, the other being Siswal in Hisar district, Haryana, about 70 km away, both on the Drishadvati; roughly 165 sites of this culture have been reported across Rajasthan, Haryana and Indian Punjab.
And then the ploughed field. From the Early Harappan level at KLB-1, south-east of the settlement: a ploughed field with a cross pattern of furrows, perhaps the earliest ploughed field ever discovered in excavation anywhere in the world. Agriculture was a major occupation and the people grew two crops in a single season; a terracotta plough from the site shows the type of share in use.
The Survey links the cross-furrows directly to that evidence for double cropping: furrows at right angles divide the field into a grid, letting two crops grow in alternating rows.
If you write one sentence about Kalibangan in Mains, this is the one. It is not just "an early ploughed field". It is direct physical evidence of a cropping technique, from the pre-Harappan level, meaning the agricultural sophistication was already there before the city was.
How Period I ended, and this is the other Kalibangan headline. The Period I settlement ran through five structural phases, building up about 1.6 m of deposit above natural soil, and then stopped. Excavation found displaced (faulted) strata and subsided walls in different parts of the dig. The reading is a seismic event around 2600 BC, which makes Kalibangan perhaps the earliest archaeologically recorded earthquake anywhere in the world. The site was reoccupied shortly afterwards by the Harappans, which is why the citadel of Period II sits directly over the abandoned Period I town.
So Kalibangan holds two "earliest in the world" claims, and candidates routinely remember one and forget the other: the ploughed field and the recorded earthquake. Both belong to the pre-Harappan phase.
Period II — the city
Two parts: citadel KLB-1 in the west, over the abandoned Period I settlement, and lower city KLB-2 to the east on the natural plain, about 40 m apart.
The citadel is roughly a parallelogram in two almost equal but differently patterned halves, inside a fortification wall, containing five or six massive mud-brick platforms, each separate, perhaps each for a specific communal purpose.
The lower city is also a parallelogram, also walled, in three to four structural phases, bricks at 40 × 20 × 10 and 30 × 15 × 7.5 cm. Inside, a gridiron street plan north–south and east–west, dividing the area into blocks. Baked brick was reserved for wells, drains, bathing platforms and door-sills.
The fire altars, and there are two separate groups of them. This is where almost every source goes wrong by reporting only half of it.
Inside the citadel (KLB-1), one of the mud-brick platforms carried a line of brick-lined fire pits running north to south. A later drain cut through and destroyed some, but B. B. Lal's reading is that there were originally seven. That is where the famous "row of seven fire altars" comes from, and it is the excavator's own reconstruction rather than seven pits found intact.
Separately, a third structure some distance east of the lower town contained four to five fire altars.
So both figures are right, about different places: seven in the citadel (reconstructed), four to five in the eastern structure. A question that pairs "seven" with the eastern structure, or "four to five" with the citadel, has swapped them.
ASI's own memoir settles this and adds a third category. Excavations at Kalibangan Part II refers directly to "the seven fire altars in the citadel mound, KLB-1", and describes KLB-3 as the ritualistic mound, east of the city mound, whose altars yielded only triangular and mushtika terracotta cakes. It also records fire altars inside ordinary houses in KLB-1 and KLB-2, one house having three, and notes that house altars contain circular cakes while KLB-3's contain the triangular and mushtika kinds.
So Kalibangan has fire altars at three levels of life at once: civic (the citadel row), specialised-ritual (KLB-3), and domestic (inside houses). That is a far better answer than a number, and it is the kind of thing only the excavation report gives you.
Finds are characteristic Harappan, including a cylindrical seal. And one stratigraphic detail deserves more attention than it gets: Period I pottery continues alongside Harappan pottery up to about half the height of KLB-2, then gives way entirely. The two ceramic traditions overlapped through a substantial thickness of deposit. What that implies about the people making them, the report does not settle, but the overlap is a fact, and it complicates any neat story of one culture simply replacing another.
Burials, three types: extended inhumation in a rectangular or oval pit; pot burial in a circular pit; and a rectangular or oval grave-pit with only pottery and funerary objects. The last two contained no skeletal remains at all.
Two of three attested forms: grave goods, no body. The memoir's own structure confirms this: its cemetery chapter is divided into extended inhumation, rectangular burials devoid of any skeletal material, and a palaeo-pathological study, with pot burials treated in a separate chapter.
KLB-8, the cemetery, and the claim that Kalibangan has the world's earliest surgery
First, a fourth mound. Most notes give Kalibangan three mounds. The Harappan cemetery is KLB-8, a separate designation, and it is where everything below comes from.
The memoir's palaeopathological study of the skeletons reads less like a site report than a casebook, and it is the most striking material in the whole volume:
- Skeleton 3, a child suffering from hydrocephaly, carries trephination marks and burning marks above the right acoustic meatus, indicating a surgical operation. The child did not survive it. The memoir states that this is "the earliest instance of a surgical operation in the world", going back to the middle of the third millennium BC.
- Skeleton 6 is described as a murdered man, attacked with a copper axe: vertical cuts about 3 cm deep and 9.5 cm long on the inner side of the left knee, with no sign of healing.
- Skeleton 8 was a crippled man with deformed left-arm bones; skeletons 5 and 13 show burning consistent with fire accidents.
The excavators draw the obvious inference and it is worth repeating in an answer: nearly all the extended inhumations appear to be abnormal cases — people who died unnatural deaths or carried a pathology. Whatever the ordinary Harappan funerary practice at Kalibangan was, this cemetery does not seem to represent it.
Use this with the attribution attached. These are the readings of A. K. Sharma, who wrote the cemetery chapter, and the memoir opens with an unusual publisher's disclaimer that "the author's prerogative to identify and describe the objects has been given unhampered primacy". Object identifications in the same volume include a terracotta "Shiva Linga" listed among religious objects, which is an interpretive label rather than a neutral description. So: cite the trephination as the excavation memoir's claim, not as settled consensus, and you are on firm ground either way.
Also from Period II levels, and rarely mentioned: terracotta camels, alongside the humped bulls, dogs, rhinoceros, elephant and boar.
The museum, since it gets asked: about 8 km south of Pilibanga, established 1985, reopened 18 May 2017 on World Museum Day.
Baror, the neighbour worth knowing
Right bank of the dried-up Sarasvati (Ghaggar) in Anupgarh tehsil, Sri Ganganagar district, about 13 km north-east of Anupgarh, at 29°10' N, 73°19' E. Excavated 2003-04 to 2006-07 under Urmila Sant and T. J. Baidya, as part of the Sarasvati Heritage Project. Surveyed earlier by L. P. Tessitori (1916-17), Aurel Stein (1940-41) and A. Ghosh. The mound is roughly 200 × 150 m and 11 m high, the higher western portion apparently the citadel, the lower eastern the town.
Conflict to note: the ASI Excavation Branch says 200 × 150 m and 11 m high; the ASI Jaipur Circle says about 183 m in diameter and 7.5 m high. Both are ASI.
Threefold sequence:
- Period I, Pre-Harappan — wheel-made red to dull red pottery, entirely unpainted, coarse to medium, poorly fired. Storage jars, handis, miniature pots. No brick structures at all; ashy bands and post-holes say the first settlers lived in wattle-and-daub or thatched huts.
- Period II, Harappan — bio-chrome pottery, black painting with an evanescent white pigment filling the gaps, dashes and dots added. Horizontal bands, loops, wavy lines, concentric arches, meanders, moustache motifs, rows of dots, cross-hatched triangles, semicircles.
- Period III, Mature Harappan — a planned town. Mud-brick house complexes oriented north–south or east–west along lanes, sub-lanes between houses, square and rectangular rooms, repeated rebuilding. A large near-circular furnace 2.60 m across, 8.12 m in circumference, with a projected mouth 1.10 m long. And a fortification wall in the north-western part of the mound. Beads, bangles, copper rings and a gold object, copper fish hooks, toys and gamesmen, and shell and steatite seals with unicorn and geometric designs.
Baror earns its place in your notes because Period I has no painting at all on the pottery and no brick structures. Set that beside Period III's planned streets and seals, and you have the entire pre-urban to urban transition on one mound.
The other Ghaggar-valley sites, now sourced from IAR
These three are named in every list and explained in almost none. Indian Archaeology — A Review settles them.
- Tarkhanewala-Dera and Chak 86 are contiguous sites, excavated together and reported together. IAR 2003-04 records that they "yielded Harappan and PGW cultural material respectively" — Tarkhanewala-Dera Harappan, Chak 86 Painted Grey Ware. That single word respectively is the whole exam point, and note the spelling Tarkhanewala, which is why searches for "Tarkhanwala" miss it.
- Karanpura is in Hanumangarh district, on the right bank of the dried channel of the Chautang (locally Chatrang or Chitrang Nadi), identified with the Drishadvati — the same river that gives the Sothi-Siswal culture its setting. It lies about 7 km from Bhadra, on the Bhadra–Goga Medi road. IAR 2013-14 records the season as a continuation of the previous one, by the Survey's Excavation Branch II under V. N. Prabhakar. The report gives its coordinates as 29°6′29″N, 75°5′50″E, which fall in Bhadra tehsil, Hanumangarh on the state GIS layer.
The Drishadvati link is the part worth carrying: Karanpura sits on the other lost river of this region, not the Ghaggar-Sarasvati that carries Kalibangan and Baror.
Binjor (4MSR), the newest site on the list
If a paper reaches for a recent excavation, this is the one it will reach for. Binjor, site code 4MSR, is in Anupgarh tehsil, Sri Ganganagar district, about 4 km from the India–Pakistan border. It was excavated in 2014-15, 2015-16 and 2017-18, and it is not a town but a craft village: an industrial settlement centred on metal working, with seven structural phases across Early, Transition and Mature Harappan periods. A fire altar with a shaft was found there, alongside the furnaces and crucibles.
Binjor matters for two reasons. It is the most recently excavated Harappan site in Rajasthan, which makes it current-affairs-adjacent. And it fills a gap in the Kalibangan-dominated picture: alongside the fortified city on the Ghaggar there was a specialised production village a short distance away, which is what a functioning economy looks like rather than a single showpiece site.
MCQ WATCH — Bronze Age
Direct fact: Kalibangan means "black bangles". It is on the left bank of the Ghaggar (ancient Sarasvati), Pilibanga tehsil, Hanumangarh district. Nine field seasons, 1961–1969, by the ASI, under B. B. Lal and B. K. Thapar. Identified as Harappan by Amlanand Ghosh, 1952; first noticed in survey by L. P. Tessitori, c. 1917-19. Museum established 1985, reopened 18 May 2017 (World Museum Day). Baror: 2003-04 to 2006-07, directed by Urmila Sant and T. J. Baidya, Sri Ganganagar district, right bank of the Ghaggar. Binjor (4MSR): Anupgarh tehsil, Sri Ganganagar, ~4 km from the Pakistan border, excavated 2014-15, 2015-16, 2017-18, a Harappan metal-craft village with a fire altar.
The two "earliest in the world" claims, both from Kalibangan's pre-Harappan Period I: the ploughed field with cross furrows, and the recorded earthquake of about 2600 BC that ended Period I, evidenced by displaced strata and subsided walls. Period I ran to five structural phases and about 1.6 m of deposit. A question asking which site gives the earliest archaeologically recorded earthquake is answered Kalibangan.
Sothi's own location: about 10 km south-west of Nohar, given as Bikaner in older sources and Hanumangarh today; type-site of the Sothi-Siswal culture with Siswal (Hisar, Haryana), roughly 165 sites reported.
The year question: nine seasons ending 1969 is the safe answer. ASI Part I says 1961-1969; ASI Part II says 1960-69. "Nine field seasons ending with 1969" is the ASI's own phrasing, and the excavation memoir is titled Excavations at Kalibangan, the Early Harappans, 1961-1969.
Mound labels, a favourite: KLB-2 largest, in the middle. KLB-1 smaller, west. KLB-3 smallest, east. The Harappan cemetery is KLB-8, a fourth designation most notes omit. In Period II the citadel is KLB-1 (west) and the lower city is KLB-2 (east), about 40 m apart.
Statement-based trap 1 — the ploughed field. It comes from the Early Harappan / pre-Harappan level at KLB-1, south-east of the settlement. A statement placing it in the Harappan (Period II) level is false. It shows a cross pattern of furrows and is linked to double cropping in one season. ASI's memoir cites B. B. Lal's own report of it in Puratattva 4, describing it as "perhaps the earliest ploughed field so far excavated anywhere in the world".
Statement-based trap 2 — the fire altars. There are two groups. A row reconstructed as seven on a platform inside the citadel (KLB-1), and four to five in a third structure east of the lower town. Both numbers are correct for their own location; swapping them is the trap. The seven are a reconstruction, since a later drain destroyed part of the row.
The headline the aggregators miss: the memoir claims Kalibangan's trephination (Skeleton 3, a hydrocephalic child, from KLB-8) is the earliest surgical operation in the world, mid-third millennium BC. Also from KLB-8: a man murdered with a copper axe (Skeleton 6). Attribute both to A. K. Sharma / the ASI memoir.
Statement-based trap 3 — the burials. Three types: extended inhumation; pot burial in a circular pit; and a grave-pit with only pottery and funerary objects. Two of the three contained no skeletal remains.
Statement-based trap 4 — the pottery overlap. Period I pottery continues alongside Harappan pottery to about half the height of KLB-2. A statement that Harappan ware replaced it immediately is false.
Sothi connection: the six fabrics (A–F) of Period I were first identified at Sothi. Fabrics A, B and D are the ones that stand apart from the Harappan assemblage.
Baror's sequence: Period I Pre-Harappan — pottery entirely unpainted, no brick structures at all. Period II Harappan — bio-chrome pottery with evanescent white pigment. Period III Mature Harappan — planned town, fortification wall in the north-west, furnace 2.60 m across.
6. Statement-based questions: where this topic is actually tested
Direct-fact questions on this unit are survivable with a good table. Statement-based questions are not, because they are built on near-misses: one true statement paired with one that is almost true. Below are the fault lines in this module, grouped by the kind of error they exploit.
Type A — Right fact, wrong period
The single most productive trap in the whole unit. Something is attributed to a later phase than the evidence supports.

Notice the pattern: in three of these four, sophistication turns out to be earlier than the careless answer assumes. If a statement pushes a feature later in time, suspect it.

Type C — Overgeneralisation
These look safe because they sound like summary statements. They are false because of a single exception.
- "All Ahar-culture sites are located in river valleys." False, because Ojiyana is on a hill slope.
- "Rajasthan's Chalcolithic is represented by the Ahar–Banas culture." Incomplete, because Ganeshwar–Jodhpura is a second, distinct Chalcolithic culture.
- "Microliths disappear with the arrival of copper." False at Bagor, where the sequence shows no break and microliths continue.
- "The Ahar culture did not use microliths." False as a generalisation. True of Ahar the site; Gilund had a stone-blade industry and a few microliths in Period I.
- "All three Kalibangan burial types contained skeletal remains." False, since two of three did not.
- "Rajasthan has no prehistoric rock art; for that you go to Bhimbetka." False. The Bundi–Bhilwara–Tonk belt has 100+ recorded sites.
Type D — Two authorities, both correct
Rare in exams but worth recognising, because if you meet one you should not panic and assume you misremembered.
- Gilund's district. ASI's excavation page: Udaipur. ASI Jaipur Circle: Rajsamand. Both ASI; the first reflects 1959-60 boundaries. Current answer: Rajsamand.
- Baror's mound. ASI Excavation Branch: 200 × 150 m, 11 m high. ASI Jaipur Circle: about 183 m diameter, 7.5 m high. Both ASI.
- Didwana's dating. 800,000 years for the Singi Talav deposit; c. 200,000 years BP for the Didwana sites generally. Different studies, different methods.
- Kalibangan's discoverer. Tessitori noticed the mound in survey around 1917-19; Ghosh identified it as Harappan in 1952. Both statements are defensible; the question's wording decides.
- Sothi's district. Older literature says Bikaner; Nohar tehsil moved in 1994, so the current answer is Hanumangarh. Exactly the Gilund problem in a different corner of the state.
- Ahar's first excavation. Reported as beginning in 1952 under R. C. Agrawala, but compressed elsewhere to "1954-56" or "1952-53 and 1953-54". The Review entries are 1954-55 and 1955-56. If a question demands one year for Agrawala's start, 1952 is the safest.
Type E — Statements that are popular but weakly sourced
Treat these with care. None rests on a primary excavation report that could be read directly.
- Earliest evidence of horse domestication at Bagor. Not supported. Bagor's domestication evidence is sheep, goat and cattle. If "horse" appears, it is the distractor.
- "Bagor is India's largest Mesolithic site." Standard in exam material and repeated in secondary literature (about 10,000 sq m, most radiocarbon dates of any Indian Mesolithic site). Usable as an answer, but not traceable to a measured ranking in a primary report.
- Excavation details for Chak 86, Tarkhanwala Dera and Karanpura are no longer unverified — the relevant Indian Archaeology — A Review volumes were read directly for this revision. See the sourced detail below.
- Any precise total for Ganeshwar's copper objects. "Over 1,000 implements documented" is the sourced form. A specific figure such as 2,000 or 5,000 is not.
- Kurada's "103 copper objects, 1934". The standard exam answer, but it circulates in preparation material rather than in a primary excavation report. Give it if offered; do not build an argument on it.
- "Pushkar of the copper age" for Ganeshwar. A phrase from Rajasthan exam literature, not from the excavation reports. Recognise it, do not cite it as scholarship.
Type F — Chronology and sequence
Straight ordering questions, and the safest marks in the unit if you have the sequence cold.
- Bagor — Phase I c. 5000–2800 BC → Phase II c. 2800–600 BC → Phase III c. 600 BC – AD 200.
- Baror — Pre-Harappan (unpainted pottery, no brick) → Harappan (bio-chrome) → Mature Harappan (planned town, fortification).
- Kalibangan — Period I Early Harappan, c. 3000–2700 BCE (fortified, Sothi fabrics, ploughed field) → Period II Mature Harappan, c. 2600–1900 BCE (citadel + lower city, grid streets, fire altars).
- Ganeshwar (conventional) — Jodhpura upper levels 2900–2500 BCE → Ganeshwar 2500–2000 BCE.
7. Writing this in Mains
Four arguments this module gives you, all sourced above. Use them instead of listing sites.
Geography explains the two Chalcolithic cultures. Farmland in the south-east produced villages, pottery and bulls. Ore in the north-east produced a metal industry with a distinctive ware and a trade network. Same period, different substrate, different society.
Technological change here is additive, not substitutive. Bagor's single unbroken sequence has microliths persisting alongside copper, then pottery, then iron. Communities absorbed new technology without abandoning the old.
Complexity appears earlier than the textbook chronology suggests. A Chalcolithic fortified enclosure at Balathal. Fortified pre-Harappan Kalibangan from the start of occupation. Cross-furrow ploughing and double cropping at the pre-Harappan level. More than a hundred seal impressions from a farming village at Gilund. The sophistication precedes the city.
Rajasthan's Chalcolithic chronology is genuinely unsettled, and that is a legitimate thing to say. Ganeshwar has no absolute dates. Balathal's fortification was misdated once and corrected. Didwana has two dating frameworks in play. An answer that acknowledges this reads as informed rather than evasive, provided you name the specific case rather than hedging in general.
8. One administrative thing that will cost you a mark
Rajasthan went from 33 districts to 50 in 2023, then back down to 41 in December 2024. Both moves matter here, and most preparation material has only absorbed the second one.
On 28 December 2024 the state cabinet dissolved nine of the districts created under the previous government (Anupgarh, Dudu, Gangapur City, Jaipur Rural, Jodhpur Rural, Kekri, Neem Ka Thana, Sanchore, Shahpura) and three divisions (Pali, Banswara, Sikar), leaving seven divisions and 41 districts.
But eight of the 2023 districts were kept. They are Balotra, Beawar, Deeg, Didwana-Kuchaman, Kotputli-Behror, Khairthal-Tijara, Phalodi and Salumbar — and this is the half that trips people up, because a candidate who has learned "the new districts were scrapped" will now get these wrong.
Three sites in this chapter moved, and stayed moved:

And two reverted, which is the opposite trap: Ganeshwar is in Sikar again (Neem Ka Thana went back to being a Sikar tehsil), and Baror and Binjor are in Sri Ganganagar again (Anupgarh went back to being a Sri Ganganagar tehsil).
Ojiyana is the one to think about rather than memorise. The site is near Asind, still a Bhilwara tehsil, so Ojiyana remains in Bhilwara — even though Beawar, the town used to locate it, is now its own district carved partly out of Bhilwara.
ASI's webpages were written before all of this and still show the older boundaries throughout. So does most exam material. Check the tehsil first, then the district, because tehsils have been far more stable than the districts above them.
9. Nowadays
Covering 1 January to 27 August 2026. This section is updated every month until Prelims and Mains. Everything in it is dated, because a current-affairs fact without a date is worse than no fact at all.
No new prehistoric excavation in Rajasthan entered the record in this window, and the most useful thing this section can do is say so precisely, because an aspirant who assumes otherwise will go looking for figures that do not exist.
Kalibangan: protection works tendered, not archaeology (January to June 2026). The ASI Jodhpur Circle tender register lists three 2026 works to secure the Harappan mounds: raising the height of the existing boundary wall, Phase II, opened 16 January 2026; a further tender for the same Phase II work opened 2 April 2026; and providing and refilling earth near the boundary wall, opened 29 June 2026. Read what that is. These are conservation and boundary works, not excavation, and a tender is a stage in a procurement, not a completed job. No completion record appears on the register. The negative finding, which is the more useful one. The ASI Jaipur Circle excavations register, last updated 7 August 2026, still ends at Bahaj, Deeg (2024-25). No new excavation in that circle's jurisdiction is on record for 2026. If a coaching note tells you a new Chalcolithic or Harappan site was excavated in Rajasthan in 2026, it is ahead of the ASI's own register.
One related item, and its limit. The ASI Jaipur Circle put four works on sale in March 2026, among them a boundary wall on land at the Abhaneri stepwell, Dausa, described as having been "made encroachment free". No date is given for that clearance, so the eviction itself cannot be placed inside this window and is not claimed here. The Jaipur Circle's tender page did not respond to automated retrieval for this check, so it is named rather than linked.
What has not changed. Nothing in this chapter was revised. Didwana's two dating frameworks remain unreconciled, Ojiyana remains the one Ahar-culture site on a hill slope, and the Ahar culture still stands at over 100 known sites against roughly seven excavated. No new radiocarbon series, excavation report or site listing bearing on Palaeolithic-to-Bronze-Age Rajasthan was published between 1 January and 27 August 2026.

Interview and Mains Angles
- Rajasthan holds two contemporaneous Chalcolithic cultures with almost nothing in common. Is the best explanation ecological (farmland against ore), or does it point to genuinely separate populations?
- Ganeshwar has roughly 500 recorded sites, over a thousand copper objects, and not one published final excavation report. What does that say about how state archaeology has been resourced, and what should be done about it?
- The Balathal fortification was published as Iron Age and later corrected to Chalcolithic. Should a syllabus that examines settled facts also teach students how archaeological claims get revised?

For every district and tehsil named in this chapter, the authority is the Rajasthan Board of Revenue's SDO-wise tehsil enumeration (as updated 22-01-2026), cross-checked against the state master-data portal (rajmasters.rajasthan.gov.in) and the RajDhara state GIS tehsil layer. All three return the same set of 41 districts and 7 divisions. On tehsils they differ by one: the Board of Revenue's roster totals 425, the RajDhara layer carries 426 polygons, and the administrative figure used here is the Board of Revenue's. Sites were resolved tehsil first, then district, because tehsil boundaries have been far more stable than the district boundaries above them through the 2023 and 2024 reorganisations.
Corrections made to the working draft before publication, logged here so nobody learns the earlier version from us:
- Kalibangan's excavation years. The draft said 1960–1969; this was changed to 1961–1969, and that change was itself too confident. Reading ASI Memoir No. 110 directly (17-Aug-2026) shows Part II runs the title The Harappans (1960-69) and cites "batches from 1960 to 1969", while Part I is titled 1961-1969. Both are ASI. The page now gives nine seasons ending 1969 and presents the span as a two-authority conflict rather than an error.
- Kalibangan's excavators were not named in the draft. Added: B. B. Lal and B. K. Thapar directed the work, with J. P. Joshi and Madhu Bala among the memoir's authors.
- Kalibangan's discovery was given as Amlanand Ghosh, 1952, without qualification. Added the earlier step: L. P. Tessitori noticed the mound in survey around 1917-19; Ghosh's 1952 contribution was identifying it as Harappan.
- Ahar's excavation years and excavators were listed as unverifiable. They are largely recoverable: R. C. Agrawala from 1952, with Review entries at 1954-55 and 1955-56, then Sankalia, Deo and Ansari, 1961-62, report 1969. This entry was itself revised after first publication: the page briefly read "R. C. Agrawala, 1954-56", which compressed a start date of 1952 out of existence. Sources also circulate a "1952-53 and 1953-54" version, so the conflict is now stated on the page rather than resolved silently.
- Balathal's discovery year and full excavation span were listed as unverifiable. Established: discovered by V. N. Misra, 1962-63; excavated 1994–2000 (the draft cited only the 1994-95 seasons), by Deccan College with the Institute of Rajasthan Studies, Rajasthan Vidyapeeth.
- Tilwara's excavation year and institution were listed as unverifiable. Reported consistently as 1967-68, Rajasthan State Department of Archaeology, under V. N. Misra, in Pachpadra tehsil. The finer detail about hearths and faunal counts remains unverified and is still flagged.
- The "horse domestication at Bagor" claim was listed only as unverified. It is now stated positively as a distractor, with the sourced fact (sheep, goat, cattle) supplied in its place, because leaving it neutral invited a wrong answer.
- Ganeshwar's copper total was listed as unverifiable. The sourced form, over 1,000 implements documented, has been added.
- Gilund's 1999–2005 re-excavation (Shinde and Possehl, 100+ seal impressions) was missing entirely and has been added.
- Ojiyana's excavation start year (2000) and Ganeshwar's excavation seasons and officers (Jodhpura from 1972-73 under R. C. Agrawala with Vijay Kumar; Ganeshwar 1979–84) were missing and have been added.
- Baror's excavation span was given as 2003 to 2006; reported more precisely as 2003-04 to 2006-07, under the Sarasvati Heritage Project.
- A period-numbering caution was added to the Ganeshwar section, because IAR numbers Period I as Mesolithic / Late Stone Age and Period III as Iron Age, which can appear to contradict the "copper from Phase III" statement drawn from the chronology literature.
Second pass, same date — content gaps closed. The following were absent from the draft entirely and have been added:
- The Balathal leprosy skeleton — the oldest documented skeletal evidence of leprosy in the world, c. 2500–2000 BCE (Robbins et al., PLoS ONE, 27-05-2009). The most quotable single fact about the site was missing.
- The Kalibangan earthquake — displaced strata and subsided walls end Period I around 2600 BC, making it perhaps the earliest archaeologically recorded earthquake anywhere. Also added: Period I's five structural phases and 1.6 m of deposit.
- The meaning of "Kalibangan" (black bangles) and Ahar's second name, Dhulkot, plus Banas as an alternative name for the culture. All are direct-recall questions.
- Sothi's own location and identity — the draft named Sothi only as where the six pre-Harappan fabrics were identified, without saying Sothi is a Rajasthan site (Nohar; Bikaner in older sources, Hanumangarh now) or that it is a type-site of the Sothi-Siswal culture.
- Binjor (4MSR) — moved out of the "could not verify" list and given its own section: Anupgarh tehsil, Sri Ganganagar, excavated 2014-15, 2015-16 and 2017-18, a Harappan metal-craft settlement with a fire altar.
- Rajasthan's prehistoric rock art — an entire limb of the syllabus phrase "Palaeolithic to Chalcolithic" was missing. Added: the Bundi–Bhilwara–Tonk belt, Bhimlat, and Om Prakash Sharma "Kukki".
- The microlith nuance at Ahar, Kurada (Nagaur) as a copper-hoard site, and the exam-literature epithet "Pushkar of the copper age" for Ganeshwar, each with its sourcing tier stated.
Third pass — district corrections (16 August 2026). The first edition of this chapter placed three sites in districts that no longer exist, because it repeated the district names printed in ASI pages and excavation reports without re-checking them against the 2023 reorganisation:
- Didwana / Singi Talav was given as Nagaur. Didwana has been in Didwana-Kuchaman since 2023.
- Tilwara was given as Barmer. Pachpadra tehsil has been in Balotra since 2023.
- Jodhpura was given as Jaipur. Kotputli tehsil has been in Kotputli-Behror since 2023.
All three of those new districts survived the December 2024 cull, so these were live errors, not merely dated ones. Checked tehsil by tehsil against the Rajasthan Board of Revenue's SDO-wise tehsil enumeration (as updated 22-01-2026) and the state master-data portal, which agree on 41 districts and 7 divisions. Two claims were re-checked and confirmed correct: Ganeshwar in Sikar (Neem Ka Thana was abolished) and Ojiyana in Bhilwara (the site is near Asind, still a Bhilwara tehsil, even though Beawar town is now its own district).
Points flagged rather than resolved: (a) the two Didwana dating frameworks are both live and are not reconciled here; (b) the ASI's own pages disagree on Gilund's district and on Baror's mound dimensions, and both readings are given with their source; (c) the IAR volumes for Chak 86, Tarkhanwala Dera and Karanpura could not be read directly, so no season-level detail is asserted for them; (e) the Kurada hoard figure (103 objects, 1934), the Ganeshwar epithet, and Kukki's site count rest on preparation literature and press reporting rather than excavation reports, and are labelled as such on the page; and (d) the ASI domain would not return readable page text to automated retrieval during this check, so ASI-attributed wording rests on the draft's earlier reading of those pages cross-checked against the excavation memoir titles and independent scholarship.
Fourth pass — coverage gaps closed (27 August 2026). A structured comparison against standard RAS preparation syllabi for this unit surfaced material that was genuinely absent from the chapter rather than merely differently worded. Each item below was verified independently before it was added, and the coaching material that prompted the check was not itself used as a source.
Budha Pushkar (Ajmer) was missing entirely, and with it the only Stone Age climatic sequence in Rajasthan besides Didwana's. Added from Bridget Allchin and Andrew Goudie, "Pushkar: Prehistory and Climatic Change in Western India", World Archaeology 5(3), 1974, pp. 358-368: three later-Pleistocene arid phases, each a sand sheet with fossil dunes; rolled Lower Palaeolithic tools in the earliest; a mature soil recording conditions wetter than the present, carrying Middle and Upper Palaeolithic working floors; Mesolithic floors on the last sand sheet. The publisher's site returns 403 to automated retrieval, so the article is cited in full rather than linked. The wider survey framework is Bridget Allchin, Andrew Goudie and Karunakara Hegde, The Prehistory and Palaeogeography of the Great Indian Desert, Academic Press, London and New York, 1978, readable at the Internet Archive.
The Mewar Plain Archaeological Assessment and its three excavated sites, Chatrikhera, Jawasiya-Arni and Pachamta (all Rajsamand), were missing entirely. Added from Prabodh Shirvalkar, Esha Prasad, Teresa Raczek and Lalit Pandey, "A Parallel Wall Structure of Ahar Culture from the Site of Pachamta, District Rajsamand, Rajasthan, India", Heritage: Journal of Multidisciplinary Studies in Archaeology 8.2 (2020), pp. 141-156, read directly: Pachamta excavated 2014-2016 as a salvage project, five mounds, the Panchamata name, K. N. Puri's earlier discovery reported in IAR 1957-58, and the parallel wall structure with bins built between 2000 and 1700 BC. This is the finding that turns Gilund's parallel-walled building from a single oddity into an architectural type of the culture.
The size of the Ahar culture was never stated. The same paper establishes over 100 known Chalcolithic sites across south-eastern Rajasthan and north-eastern Madhya Pradesh, spanning c. 3000-1700 BCE, against roughly seven excavated. The chapter previously described four sites without saying what proportion of the culture they represent.
Purani Marmi (Chittorgarh) and its terracotta bull figurines were missing, leaving the chapter's bull argument resting on two sites where the literature supports three. Added from V. N. Misra, V. Shinde, R. K. Mohanty and L. Pandey, "Terracotta Bull Figurines from Marmi: A Chalcolithic Settlement in Chitorgarh District, Rajasthan", Man and Environment 18(2), 1993, pp. 149-152.
Districts for every site added in this pass were resolved against the same authority used throughout the chapter, the Rajasthan tehsil layer carrying 41 districts and 426 tehsil polygons: Pushkar is a tehsil of Ajmer and remains so after the 2023 reorganisation despite Kekri and Beawar being carved out; Rajsamand and Chittorgarh both survive unchanged.
Not added, and why. Three claims that circulate widely in preparation material for this unit could not be confirmed against any primary or scholarly source reachable during this check: C. A. Hackett's 1870 handaxes from Jaipur and Indragarh, Seton-Karr at Jhalawar in 1908, and the standard roster of minor copper-age findspots (Kiradot, Malah, Sabaniya, Pugal, Elana, Kol Maholi). All three are recorded in the Aggregator Watch box above rather than in the body of the chapter, because a name repeated identically across a dozen coaching sites is evidence of copying, not of excavation. One correction is worth stating positively: the third author of the 1978 Thar volume is Karunakara Hegde, not the "M. Hegde" that preparation material commonly prints.
