Launched 25 December 2000; initial allocation was 25 kg per family at ₹2/₹3/kg (wheat/rice); raised to 35 kg in 2002; expanded multiple times; now a distinct priority category under NFSA 2013.

Distinction from Priority Household (PH) category under NFSA; AAY gets 35 kg vs PH 5 kg per person; AAY rice at ₹3/kg, wheat ₹2/kg.
