Global Hunger Index (GHI)

An annual composite index measuring hunger and food insecurity globally across four indicators — undernourishment, child stunting, child wasting, and child mortality — currently published jointly by Concern Worldwide and Welthungerhilfe.

Context & Background

First published in 2006 by IFPRI (International Food Policy Research Institute) and Welthungerhilfe; Concern Worldwide joined as co-publisher from 2007; IFPRI later stepped back; India has consistently ranked poorly and disputes the methodology.

UPSC Exam Relevance

India ranked 102nd/123 (GHI 2025, score 25.8 — "Serious" category; released October 2025); improved from 105th/127 in GHI 2024 (score 27.3); highest child wasting rate globally (18.7%); Indian government contests methodology — child indicators overrepresent child outcomes vs overall hunger; distinction from FAO's SOFI report (State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World).
