Sardeshmukhi

noun (historical; chiefly Indian English)
/sɑːrˈdeɪʃmuːkiː/
An additional levy of one-tenth (10%) of the revenue claimed by Shivaji and his successors over and above chauth, asserted on the basis of the Maratha ruler's position as Sardeshmukh (hereditary overlord) of Maharashtra.

✍️ Usage in a UPSC answer

The Maratha fiscal architecture of Chauth and Sardeshmukhi was less a settled system of taxation than an instrument of expanding suzerainty, allowing the Marathas to extract a recurring share of revenue from territories they did not directly administer while cloaking the claim in the legitimising garb of hereditary overlordship.

🌱 Word Family

🔡 Root

Marathi sar = head, chief; deshmukh = district chief (hereditary revenue title); compound = supreme district-headman's levy

📜 Etymology

From Marathi sardeshmukh, combining sar ("head, chief") and deshmukh ("district chief"), a hereditary revenue title in the Deccan; Shivaji claimed this title as the supreme deshmukh of the Maratha homeland.

🧠 Memory Hook

Break it down: Sar (chief) + Desh (country) + Mukhi (headman) = "the country's chief headman" — and Sardeshmukhi is the 10% cut he claims. Think "Sir of the Desh takes his tenth."
